The 110 freeway is the oldest freeway in the state of California. This freeway is a hub for commuters and travelers, but also for sports enthusiasts. Along the 110 freeway, there are three major venues that hold sporting events – Dodger Stadium, Staples Center, and the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Each year, at least 8 million people travel to the area for sporting events, and use the 110 freeway. This can be extremely frustrating for drivers who are not attending events.

How to Avoid Gridlock on the 110 Freeway During Sporting Events

Avoiding gridlock is not always a simple task, but there are ways that you can navigate through the chaos and reduce your own commute, and frustration. Most people will tell you the best way to avoid gridlock is to avoid driving on the 110 freeway during “rush hour” – the busiest time of day for most roads. In the L.A. area, this is 7:30-9:30 a.m. and 3:30-7:30 p.m.

Of course, not everyone can avoid a commute or appointment during those hours. For these drivers, here are some tips for avoiding gridlock on the 110 freeway during sporting events.

  • Google Maps – With Google maps, you can enter your destination and have the program review current traffic conditions. It will then recommend the best route for you to take, avoiding accidents, snarls, or roadwork.
  • 511 – The go511 website has up-to-date information about traffic around the city. The map offers a live, real time view of traffic throughout Southern California. The traffic map is made in partnership with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Caltrans.
  • Carpool – Many freeways in L.A. have High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. These lanes are dedicated to vehicles carrying two or more people. You can often bypass some of the gridlock by using an HOV lane.
  • ExpressLanes – ExpressLanes are toll lanes, with a toll calculated based on congestion. Drivers who are willing to pay to bypass congestion can use these dedicated lanes and avoid some snarls. Drivers can get a FasTrak transponder, which allows them to pay tolls electronically without ever stopping or leaving their vehicle.
